A self-assessment tool for social responsibility in higher education. Reporting on a national policy development process in Portugal

Purpose Providing higher education institutions (HEIs) with a tool for self-assessing their social responsibility (SR) that generates the information and knowledge necessary to strategic approach adopting Green Paper recommendations about SR of HEIs. Setting out collaborative policy development process construct “Indicators HEIs” (ISRHEI). Design/methodology/approach After literature review, including self-assessment (SA) tools leading guidelines, working group 24 Portuguese HEIs was created co-construct ISRHEI tool, which then subject validation in pilot study. Findings There are 34 indicators structured by sequential levels according HEI alignment (policies, procedures, practices monitoring along continuum) hoping achieve impacts on organisational, educational, cognitive level.
